Walter Frederick Brunkow, age 85 of the Pleasant View Nursing Home of Monroe, died on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe. He was born on August 28, 1923 in Monroe, Wisconsin, the son of Fred William and Gladys (Schultz) Brunkow. He attended Goodrich School and Round Grove School. Walter farmed most of his life, including in rural Juda for eight years, and in rural Brodhead for one year. He was married on January 25, 1969 to Cora Helena (Johnson) Hermanson at the Blanchardville Lutheran Church in Blanchardville. They moved to Monroe where he worked at the Green County Farm Bureau, Luguano Cheese, was a custodian at the Monroe Manor, and then worked at Swiss Colony for 14 years. He was also a 4-H leader for 14 years. In his younger days he enjoyed fishing, dancing and card playing. Walter lived at St. Claire Friedensheim Assisted Living for 6 years until recently when he moved to the Pleasant View Nursing Home.

Walter is survived by one brother, Robert (Jan Moisan) Brunkow of Monroe; two sisters, Katherine Updike, of Monroe and Dorothy (Herbert) Johnson of Monroe; many nieces and nephews; and three step-daughters, Thelma (Otis) Lokken of Madison, Helen Meeker of Madison, and Barbara (Phillip) Halverson of Madison; and many step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred in 1972, his mother Gladys in 1994, a sister-in-law Ruth Priewe Brunkow in 1992, a brother-in-law Eugene E. Updike in 1999, his wife Cora who died on March 1, 2001, and his stepson-in-law Michael Meeker in 2007.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at the Blanchardville Lutheran Church in Blanchardville. Rev. Mark Gruner, assisted by Intern Dave Nelsestuen of the Pecatonica Lutheran Parish will officiate. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Blanchardville. Friends may call on Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Saether Funeral Home in Blanchardville is assisting the family. (608) 523-4247
