MONROE - Dustin W. Smith, 29, Browntown, was uninjured after his vehicle hit a fire hydrant on 16th Avenue at 23rd Street. Smith was arrested at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday for driving while intoxicated and cited for open intoxicants in a vehicle, failure to maintain control of a vehicle and improper right turn. Smith was released pending court. Police Chief Fred Kelley said no water escaped the fire hydrant because they are usually turned off underground, unless the valve on top is turned. "There's a valve on top, and as long as that's not open or sheared off then water doesn't spray everywhere," Kelley said, and added "I think that's more of a movie thing. In this case, for sure no water was spewing." Smith's vehicle was moderately damaged and was towed from the scene.
