MONROE - A Minnesota man made his initial appearance in Green County Circuit Court Monday to face charges of car theft and obstructing an officer.

Bradley J. Durenberger, 36, Rochester, Minn. is charged with driving a vehicle without the owner's consent, a class I felony, and obstructing an officer, a class A misdemeanor.

He faces more than four years in prison and up to $20,000 in fines if convicted.

He remains jailed on a $2,500 cash bond.

Durenberger was arrested May 1 after the Green County Sheriff's Department received a call about a vehicle parked near Potter cemetery on Wisconsin 11 about a half-mile west of Monroe.

The caller told the sheriff's department dispatcher a man near the vehicle was acting suspiciously in the area of Potter Church, directly across the highway from the cemetery.

After arriving on scene, deputies learned the 1984 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight was reported stolen the night before from Mower County, Minn. in the southeastern part of the state. The owner of the vehicle said the car was stolen from where she worked.

Durenberger was found by K-9 units in a wooded area. He was lying down and partially covered by his outerwear clothing. He did not respond to or obey the police officer's commands. Officers used pepper spray to subdue him.

Durenberger's preliminary hearing is May 14.
