NEW GLARUS - Richard Gordon Wainwright, age 83, of New Glarus passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at the New Glarus Home. He was born on September 14, 1928 at Shorewood, WI to his parents Clarence and Arminta (Van Matre) Wainwright. Richard graduated from Monroe High School and then earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. On August 20, 1950 he was united in marriage to Lois Kathryn Blum at St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe, WI. Richard worked as a high school teacher for many years he first taught at the Wonewoc High School for five years and then taught at the New Glarus High School for thirty-seven years until his retirement. He also coached boys' and girls' basketball, golf, baseball, and football and was inducted into the Wisconsin Coaches Hall of Fame on September 30, 2006. Richard was a member of the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus, the New Glarus Masonic Lodge #310, and a charter member of the Edelweiss Chalet Country Club. Richard was an accomplished athlete, an avid golfer who won the championship flight of the Huber Open in 1969 and the 1972, 1973, and 1976 Green County Open and was inducted into the UW-Platteville Hall of Fame on November 11, 1972. He also played for the New Glarus Home Talent Baseball team and for the Chevrolet Softball team.

Richard is survived by his wife Lois Wainwright of New Glarus, sons Mark (Susan) Wainwright of Verona, WI, Michael (Susan) Wainwright of Monticello, WI, Matt Wainwright of New Glarus, and Mitch (Ellie) Wainwright of Mineral Point, WI. He is further survived by his grandchildren Tyler and Tessa Wainwright, Danielle (Tim) Swenson, Abbey (Matt) Ballweg, Luke Wainwright and Lee Owen, Erik Wainwright, Rory Wainwright, and Madelaine Wainwright, great-grandchildren Bree, Brynn, and Kinley Swenson, Braiden Wainwright, and Hudson Ballweg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother A. Keith Wainwright, and a sister-in-law Dorothy Durst Wainwright.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at the Swiss United Church of Christ, 18 Fifth Ave., New Glarus, WI with the Rev. Todd Hackman and Pastor Petra Streiff officiating.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at the Swiss United Church of Christ.

A memorial fund has been established.

I have so many happy memories of grandpa. Such a quiet man, but you always knew how much he loved you with that amazing smile of his. He would do anything for his family.
