MONROE - The Monroe Police Department plans to make sure people use their seatbelts.

Capt. Jim Kosek announced Tuesday the department received $10,120 from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Safety to increase seatbelt enforcement in 2008-09.

The extra money will help pay for officers' overtime and to purchase equipment for seatbelt enforcement, Kosek said.

Kosek said the grant basically is the same one the department received for 2007-08. During that time, he added, the department increased citations for seatbelt violations by 40 percent over the previous year.

"Our safety belt enforcement goal is to not write more tickets but to save lives and prevent serious injuries," Kosek said. "We hope people will voluntarily buckle up every time they drive or ride in a vehicle."

The department also will take part in the national "Booze-N-Belt" campaign to combat drunken driving as well as seatbelt violations.

"We'll have more squads on the streets this holiday season to drive those points home," Kosek said.
