Paul Grassel died peacefully on October 16, 2010, at Monroe Clinic Hospital of respiratory complications.
On Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 11 a.m. a memorial mass, celebrated by Rev. David Wanish, will be held at St. Victor Catholic Church in Monroe to honor and celebrate Paul's life. The family will greet friends at the church beginning at 10 a.m.
Paul was born in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Elizabeth (McGarvey) and Charles Grassel. Although he lived in many states, and traveled in all fifty, he truly always remained a Pennsylvanian.
Paul's hobbies were cooking and people. He loved food, and got great enjoyment serving his friends and family his "special" spaghetti or Mexican cuisine. He considered his friends one of life's greatest treasures. Traveling to East McKeesport PA each September for his school reunions was a top priority in these last years.
Paul served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force where he played football, as he also did when in college and beyond. He graduated with a degree in agronomy and spent his career teaching farmers about growing and storing alfalfa to provide the best nutrition for their cattle. He often said that his work with farmers throughout many states in the U.S. really never seemed like a job- "it was Fun".
Despite his blustery nature, Paul was very sensitive and kind. His generosity usually focused on the needs of others who he considered less fortunate, especially children, the poor, elderly, and animals. He was very bonded to his Monroe dogs, Tucker and Chance, both of whom predeceased him.
Paul is survived by his loving partner, Sybil Teehan, Monroe; one sister, Jean (Dom) Boggie, Pittsburgh, P.A.; two daughters, Jenny (Mark) Timmerman, Madison, WI and Jackie (Michael) Wickham, Lancaster, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Emily, Andrew and Charlie Timmerman and Ivan Joseph Wickham.
He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
