MONROE - Patrol officers will be stepping up traffic enforcement Dec. 9 to 17 as part of a statewide "Booze and Belts" campaign, according to a recent announcement from the Monroe Police Department.
The pre-holiday mobilization is intended to prevent traffic deaths and injuries by sending officers out in force to arrest drunk drivers and ticket seatbelt violators.
"If you drive drunk, you are risking humiliation, huge fines, possible jail time," Monroe Police Captain James Kosek said in a statement. "You also are risking your life and the lives of others on the road."
Wisconsin police reported more than 40,000 convictions for drunk driving in 2010, as well as 120,000 convictions for failure to fasten a seatbelt.
