MONTICELLO - Green County Sheriff Deputies and firefighters respond to the sound of an explosion of natural gas pipe equipment at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, at N4982 Center Road in Washington township, about four miles southwest of Monticello.

According to Michael Loeffler of Northern Gas, equipment at the Belleville compressor station was malfunctioning and gas was vented. The venting was sudden and probably made a loud noise. However, Loeffler said there wasn't any explosion and no one was in any danger.

There was a strong smell of natural gas in the area, Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick.

The Monticello and Monroe fire departments were dispatched to the scene, Roderick said.
