DARLINGTON - A multiple-vehicle accident around 4:45 p.m. Saturday on Wisconsin 23 in Darlington township resulted in one person being transported to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County with non-life-threatening injuries and several other people being treated on the scene and released.

A southbound vehicle, driven by Kara L. Smocke, 26, Browntown, pulled to the shoulder and stopped because of diminished visibility. His vehicle was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Barbara J. Berget, 57, South Wayne.

Lafayette County Sheriff's Deputy, Paul Klang, operating a county squad car, witnessed the accident and made initial contact with crash victims.

Upon returning to his vehicle, his car was struck by a vehicle driven by Rod D. Maurer, 39, Gratiot. Klang's vehicle, in turn, struck the Smocke vehicle.

Another vehicle, driven by Robert L. Meehan, 63, Darlington, then struck Klang's vehicle, trapping him. Meehan exited his vehicle to check on Klang, when Meehan's vehicle was struck by a vehicle driven by Christopher D. Roelli, 37, Darlington.

Meehan was struck and pinned between the squad car and his vehicle. Another vehicle, driven by Cory L. Snyder, 21, Platteville, avoided striking the vehicles, but lost control, crossed the highway and struck the northbound ditch. Smocke's, Klang's, Snyder's and Meehan's vehicles received substantial damage. Roelli's and Maurer's vehicle received damages also. The crash remains under investigation.
