Morris Rodger Elmer, age 90 of Beloit, formerly of Monroe, died Sunday, February 1, 2009 in Madison. He was born to Henry and Ethyl (Green) Elmer on June 4, 1918 in Laona, Illinois.

Morrie graduated from Monroe High School in 1937. After serving in the U.S. Army during WWII, he married Gerda Beutel on September 6, 1946 in Monroe. They lived in Beloit for 50 years where they raised four children. Morrie retired from Fairbanks Morse (Colt Industries) after 40 years of employment. In his youth as well as in retirement, Morrie played golf and during the season could be found at the local golf course five days a week.

He also had fun camping with his family, fishing, and watching old movies. He was a man who often enjoyed the pleasure of simply having a conversation with the person sitting next to him.

Survivors include Gerda, his wife of 62 years, now residing in Cottage Grove, WI; his four children, Tom of Pleasanton, CA, Nancy Elmer (Gordon Burki) of Woodruff, WI, Timm of Atlanta, GA, and Mary (Todd) Nieting of Waterloo, WI; seven grandchildren, Carrie (Art) Widman, Bryan Dale, Matthew (Theresa) and David (Rachel) Fiedler, Jacob, Samuel, and Emma Nieting; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clarence (Grace) Elmer of Janesville, Loren (Lu) Elmer and Curtis (Nancy) Elmer of Monroe; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Elmer of Rock City, IL, Shirley Elmer and Charlene Beutel of Monroe; two brothers-in-law, Ernest Beutel of Monroe and Heinz (Dorothy) Beutel of Belleville, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-grandson; his sister Dorothy Camron; and four brothers, Lee, Rodney, Ralph, and Virgil Elmer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe, with Pastor Margo Peterson officiating. Interment will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Juda followed by a luncheon at the Monroe V.F.W. Post #2312. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established in Morris' name.
