Mary E. Buol, age 84, of Monroe died on Monday, February 12, 2018. She was born August 12, 1933 to Robert and Elizabeth (Schneider) Maurer. This was in the middle of the Great Depression, but the Maurer's were town folk with jobs and life was not quite as bad as what other folks endured. She was raised to honor her German heritage that was passed down from her Parents and Grandparents. Mary was the proverbial apple of her Dad's eye as his little "Cookie" could do no wrong. She had two big brothers to watch out for her. Although she was in the Monroe Class of 1951, she did not like school and did not graduate. She would hang out around town with her friend Lois Anderson who was to become her sister-in-law Lois Buol. It was during this time she met the Buol boys. Although she was originally sweet on Andy, it was the older quiet and shy Peter that would steal her heart and become her life partner for 64 years. They were married on February 4, 1950 at Grace Lutheran Church in Monroe.

Mary would become a farm wife like so many other women of her time. Doing whatever was needed to help her husband and family. Driving tractor, maintaining a huge garden, raising chickens to trade eggs for groceries. All the while having and raising seven children by the time she was 32 years old. Life was hard and good all at the same time. She enjoyed many things that others in the 50's and 60's did; smoking cigarettes, drinking lots of coffee and gossiping on the phone whenever possible. Cards on Saturday night was a big deal too. She was an outstanding cook instructed by her Mother, but mostly self-taught, by trial and error. When men would do custom silo filling and corn picking for the Buol's a good meal or two was going to be had in Mary's kitchen. Nieces and nephews would love to go down to the Buol farm for baked goods she would whip up.

For a short time she worked at Hughes Mobile Homes with her sister-in-law Louise Steiner. Later she would work with her daughter Becky and brother Dick Maurer in the laundry at St. Clare Hospital. Due to health reasons she would not be able to work outside the home after 1975. Peter and Mary left the farm in 1974 and moved into Monroe. She would be a constant companion for her aging Mother until her death in 1994. Mary enjoyed many small things that life had to offer. Going to McDonalds for coffee and friendship. Crocheting and needle point work. Country music with Marty Robbins and Jim Reeves were some her favorites. She enjoyed mystery television shows with stars like David Jansen, James Garner and Angela Lansbury to name a few.

She enjoyed the companionship of her pet friends; Candy, Doodles and Sadie.

Mary was a dedicated wife, Mother and Grandmother to her family. She suffered a broken heart with Peter's death and never recovered. She will be missed by her friends and family.

She is survived by her 7 children: George (Joyce) Buol, Scott (Robbyn) Buol, Becky (Donald) Brown, Michael (Deena) Buol all of Monroe, Cyndi (Gary) Goodman of Freeport, Peter J. (Debbie) Buol of New Glarus, Brenda (Jack) Thomas of Orangeville; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Maurer, brothers-in-law, LeRoy Buol and Walter Steiner; sisters-in-law, Mary Maurer and Rose (Walters) Buol and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Peter in 2014, grandson, Benjamin Scott Buol in 1970; brother, Robert in 1985; and a sister in infancy.

Funeral services will be 12:00 Noon Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church 1025 15th Avenue, in Monroe, with Pastor John Tabaka officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in Mary's name to either Grace Lutheran Church or Green County Humane Society.
