MONROE - Mardell H. Ruef, age 93 of Monroe and the Brodhead area, died on Monday, May 18, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. She was born on December 11, 1915, in Green County, the daughter of Louis and Lena (Theiler) Pfund. She was a 1933 graduate of Monroe High School and a graduate of Green County Normal School. Mardell married, Norman Poff and later married Adolph Ruef.

Mardell was the co-owner for Poff's Cycle Shop for several years and later worked for Benkert Clothing Store for over 20 years. When Mardell was not working she was a caregiver to many, taking care of her husband Adolph for 18 years after his stroke. She was a life member of St. John's United Church of Christ. Mardell's heritage dates back to her great uncle Adam Blumer who was the founder of the Blumer Brewery in Monroe.

Surviving is her son, Gary Poff of Cary, IL; several nieces, nephews and many friends. She is predeceased by her parents, her husbands and a sister, Bernice Pellett, October 10, 2006.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 12:00 noon, at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. William T. Mike Heath, with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. A visitation will be held on Thursday, from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at noon, at the funeral home.
