Man faces 7th OWI after police chase and crash

TOWN OF JORDAN — A New Glarus man with a conviction history of driving under the influence of alcohol was arrested again Monday, August 9 after almost colliding with several vehicles.

Deputies responded to the Town of Jordan W7900 block of South Highway 81 at 12:56 p.m. where they observed the vehicle operate left of the center line. A pursuit was ensued after the police attempted to stop Paul M. Elsner, 60, during a traffic stop. The pursuit ended when Elsner’s vehicle lost control while negotiating a curve in the roadway The vehicle entered the ditch and was overturned. Airbags did not deploy.

Elsner sustained non-life-threatening injuries and reporter he was wearing his seatbelt. He was transported by New Glarus EMS to the Monroe Clinic emergency room for injuries sustained during the crash. The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

Elsner faces a felony seventh-offense charge of operating while under the influence. In Wisconsin, a seventh-offense OWI conviction requires a minimum sentence of three years. The maximum sentence on the Class F felony is 12 and a half years. 

Elsner was placed under arrest for charges of Operate While under the Influence (alcohol) seventh Offense, Fleeing an Officer and Bail Jumping. He was also cited for Operate Left of Center, Passing in a No Passing Zone, Failure to Keep Vehicle under Control, Possession of Open Intoxicants in a Motor Vehicle, Operate After Revocation, and Failure to Install an Ignition Interlock Device. 

Elsner was incarcerated in the Green County Jail pending an initial court appearance.
