TOWN OF MT. PLEASANT — Investigation into a hit-and-run crash discovered late Aug. 23 near Monticello led to citations against the Monroe man identified as the driver.

Gregory L. Wilhite, 48, was cited for failure to notify law enforcement of an accident, failure to keep a vehicle under control, hit-and-run to property adjacent to the highway and no vehicle insurance.

Power lines down in the roadway near the intersection of County C and Marshall Bluff Road, Town of Mount Pleasant, were reported just before 10 p.m. Aug. 23, according to the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and the Monticello Fire Department responded to the scene and discovered that a westbound vehicle on County C went off the road, collided with a power pole, causing damage to the pole and the power lines to fall. The driver then fled. Alliant Energy responded to make repairs.

The next day at about 1:15 p.m., Monticello police observed a damaged vehicle in the 500 block of South Monroe Street and determined it was the vehicle involved in the previous night’s crash.

The driver, Wilhite, reported he was uninjured and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Police determined he lost control and went off the road because he failed to negotiate a curve.
