MONROE - A rural Monroe man was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated after he crashed a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer just south of the city Monday afternoon, Aug. 27.
Robert P. Nelson, 21, also faces charges of disorderly conduct, reckless driving and non-registration of a vehicle.
A Monroe police officer was handling a traffic stop on 8th Avenue at about 3:40 p.m. when he saw the SUV fly past at an estimated 70 mph and pass cars against oncoming traffic, according to Chief Fred Kelley.
The officer lost sight of the vehicle before he was able to stop it. A witness told him it left the city southbound on Clarno Road.
The officer located a crash scene on Clarno Road at Melvin Road and recognized it as the same SUV. Green County EMS and the Monroe Fire Department responded to the scene.
Nelson lost control while attempting to turn east onto Melvin Road, according to Green Count deputies who investigated the accident.
The SUV entered a cornfield and overturned, coming to a rest on its passenger side. It was moderately damaged and towed.
Nelson was transported to the Monroe Clinic ER for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash. While at the ER, he was reportedly loud and verbally abusive with staff.
He was jailed pending court.
