Luella M. (Fahrney) McNeill age 95, of Monroe, Wisconsin, died Monday, December 26, 2011 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. She was born October 5, 1916 at Fall River, WI the daughter of Jesse and Mamie (Lees) Lynch.
At a very young age, Luella had to assume responsibilities beyond her years after her mother was stricken with the Spanish Flu. In her early years she helped her father by doing chores and working in the fields behind a team of horses. She acquired her education at various one-room country schools in Green County. Like other youngsters at the time, she would have to walk to school, but at times had the added burden of carrying her handicapped sister on her back.
At the age of 16, Luella married John O. Fahrney on February 23, 1933 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe. She began her life as a farm wife at the height of the depression on what she referred to as "a pile of rocks" near Juda. She and John later farmed in the Blanchardville and Hollandale area. After retirement, they lived in Hollandale, Monticello and Monroe. John died on June 23, 1978.
Luella then married LeRoy "Bud" McNeill on April 11, 1981 at Washington Reformation Church, rural Monticello. They enjoyed many years of travel, casino trips, community involvement and visits with friends and family.
Luella was a member of Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello.
Surviving are her children, Richard (Eileen) Fahrney of Sun Prairie, Donald (Kay) Fahrney of Monticello, & Lee (Marilyn) Fahrney of Hollandale; step-children, Janayne (Leo) Spellman of Darlington & Earl (Virginia) McNeill of Hollandale; step-daughter-in-law, Linda McNeill of Hollandale; 12 grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren & several great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; husbands; brother, Bernard Lynch; sister, Dorothy Higbee; grandson, Robert Fahrney; step-son, Lee McNeill; step-grand-daughter, Jamie Blaser.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Zwingli United Church of Christ, 416 E. Lake Street in Monticello with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home 1455 Mansion Drive & N. 18th Avenue in Monroe and from 10:00 A.M. until time of service Thursday at the Church.
