Leo W. Whalen, age 94 of Monroe, died Saturday, May 23, 2009 at his home. Leo was born March 5, 1915 in Thayer, Illinois, the son of Patrick and Ella (Martin) Whalen.

He married Bernadine H. Boehler on January 4, 1940 in Morrisonville, IL.

They lived in Morrisonville, Nokomis, and Hillsboro, Illinois before moving to the Juda area in 1964. Leo retired from farming and moved to Monroe in 1985.

He was a member of St. Victors Catholic Church in Monroe, Knights of Columbus Council #1471, and Green County Farm Bureau. Leo was fortunate to have been blessed with many years of good health. He loved dairy farming, was an avid baseball fan especially the New York Yankees, and was proud of his Irish heritage.

He is survived by nine children, Bernard (Polly) Whalen of Monroe, Donald (Patricia) Whalen of Beloit, Wanda (Fred) Brown of Forsyth, IL, Catherine (Emil) Treuthardt, Barbara (Robert) Alston, all of Monroe, Robert (Marcia) Whalen, Lawrence (Diana) Whalen, all of Brodhead, Rose (Merle) Hull of Freeport, IL, and Michael (Beth) Whalen of Argyle; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Patrick (Patricia) Whalen of Morrisonville, IL; and three sisters, Mildred DeFeo of Springfield, IL, Margie Mormino of Hillsboro, IL, and Mary (Dick) Mormino of Taylorville, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernadine, on Jan. 9, 1995; two brother and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Victor Catholic Church,1760 14th Street, Monroe. Celebrant will be Father Michael Klarer with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME , Monroe, on Wednesday, May 27, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Thursday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established in Leo's name for St. Clare Friedensheim and The Apostolate to the Handicapped. www.newcomerfuneralhome.net
