Larry Eugene Lund, 72, Lake Lure, North Carolina, passed quietly to be with the Lord after a short battle with pancreatic cancer on August 9, 2008.

Larry was born to Arnold and Flo Lund in 1936 and raised in the Dixon, Ill., area. In high school he was an avid basketball player. Larry graduated from Iowa State University in 1954, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Lynn and settled in McHenry, Ill., and raised his family. Larry served in the army reserves.

Larry was the publisher of the McHenry Plaindealer from 1960 until 1980, he was also publisher and owner of the Monroe Evening Times from 1976 until 1990 at which time he sold the company to Bliss Communications. He also purchased the Darlington Republican Journal in 1980.

Larry and Lynn made many great friends where ever they went. Together they traveled extensively and saw much of the United States and Europe. Places they called home were Dixon, IL; McHenry, IL; Davis, IL; Marco Island, FL and Lake Lure, NC. Grandkids knew him as "Grampa", "Papa", "Papa Loop" and "Grand-dude". He had a very tight bond with his grandchildren and had special relationships with them all.

Larry's favorite pastime was "computering". He was the first one on the block to own a computer and stayed current through all his years. Larry was the "on call" computer advisor and helped many people learn how to operate a computer. Larry also was an avid boater and with his sister Kay, they were the first to water ski on the Rock River in Dixon, IL. His other passion was aviation and aircraft, he often went to museums and air shows to marvel at the engineering that went into flying. Larry will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Larry spent his life dedicated to his family.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn; a son Brian (and fiancée Diane Hubner); daughters Margo (son-in-law, Doug Stutesman) and Miranda (son-in-law Brian Cross); grandsons Ian, Charlie and Jack; granddaughters Tara, Carly (and fiancé Koller), Natalie and Jayden; his sister, Kay Lund Shoffeitt (brother-in-law, Farrell Shoffeitt).

Memorial services will be held August 25, 2008 at the Fairfield Mountains Chapel in Lake Lure. We ask that everyone who knew him just always remember him as the dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend that he was. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to either Hospice of Rutherford County or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
