MONROE TOWNSHIP - Seven area fire departments responded late Monday to a fully engulfed Quonset hut about 4 miles north of Monroe.
The fire caused no injuries and spread from a wood stove located in the Quonset hut at N4479 County J, according to Deputy Chief Lane Heins of the Monroe Fire Department. The Quonset hut is on residential property belonging to John and Shelly McCormick.
Heins estimates the fire caused $30,000 to $40,000 in damages. It destroyed a tractor in the Quonset hut, along with the wood stove and surrounding firewood.
Monroe firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 11:14 p.m. The call set off the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), and fire departments also responded from Orangeville, Juda, Browntown, Monticello, Brodhead and New Glarus. The Freeport Rural and Cedarville Fire Departments provided backup for Monroe.
High winds caused the fire to spread quickly before firefighters were able to put it out.
"We were dealing with 30, 40 mph winds out there," Heins said.
Green County deputies assisted with traffic control. The Green County Highway Department also assisted by salting roads around the area, Heins said.
