Kenneth L. Mayer, age 88, formerly of Monroe, died on Monday, March 14, 2011 in Harrison, AR, at Hospice of the Hills. He was born on May 28, 1922, in South Wayne, the son of Fred and Versa (Bissell) Mayer. He grew up on a farm south of South Wayne and was a graduate of South Wayne High School. Ken and Gayle M. Reese were married on August 18, 1949 in San Antonio, TX, she preceded him in death, he later married Elaine Buhai on June 12, 1976 in Chicago. He operated the DX oil bulk plant and was the Water Superintendant for Monroe from 1947 to 1984, and in conjunction with water superintendant, he operated the WI Fire Apparatus Co. for several years. He was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church in Monroe. After his retirement he moved to Lead Hill, AK, where he loved to fish on his pontoon boat. Ken loved gardening, nature and animals. He spent his leisure time reading and enjoying the company of his neighbors and friends.

He is survived by his children, David Mayer of Monroe, Daniel (Dawn) Mayer of LaCrosse, Susan Jo Neuberger of Menomonee Falls; 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; brother, Theodore Mayer of Monroe and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; wife, Gayle in 1975 and a sister, Virginia Windsor.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at noon at the Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, with Rev. David Busker officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service at noon at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in Ken's memory.
