Joyce E. (Haman) Tertin, age 84 of Monroe, died Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Monroe Manor. Joyce was born June 29, 1928 in Orangeville, IL, the daughter of William F. and Sarah "Sadie" (Davidson) Haman. Joyce graduated from Monroe High School in 1946 and married Virgil W. Tertin on April 20, 1947 at the Immanuel Evangelical Church in Monroe. She worked as a beautician in Charlotte's Magee's beauty shop for several years prior to having children. Joyce was also self employed constructing drapery from her home and for 13 years she worked as a retail clerk for the Elegant Needle. She was an active member of the Monroe United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for several years, sang in the choir, and led several bible studies. Joyce deeply loved her family and had a passion for taking care of her home. Her other joys included sewing, needlework, knitting, reading, gardening, and traveling.
She is survived by her husband, Virgil Tertin of Monroe; three sons, James (Debra) Tertin of Baxter, MN, David (Diane) Tertin of Browntown, Joel (Cheryl) Tertin of Monroe; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Doris (Mike) Schmerse of Monroe. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, William Virgil Tertin on Jan. 20, 1957; and a sister, Kay Ann Haman in infancy.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 10, 2012, at 11 a.m., at the Monroe United Methodist Church. Reverend Randy Booth will officiate with a luncheon to follow at the church. A private family inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday, August 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Joyce's name for the United Methodist Church students for post-secondary education.
