John L. Allendorf, 83, of Shullsburg, WI passed away May 18, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, IA. Funeral Mass will be Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 10:30 am at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Shullsburg and where friends may call after 9:30 am at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded at graveside. Friends may call from 4 to 8 pm, Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the Furlong Funeral Home, Shullsburg and where a scripture wake service will be held at 3:45 pm. He was born October 30, 1925 in Menominee, IL the son of John and Anna (Miller) Allendorf. He was united in marriage to Vivian March on November 6, 1943 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Galena and she survives. He enlisted in the US Navy on January 7, 1944 and served in Africa, Italy, Sicily and France until his honorable discharge in 1946. Prior to joining the Navy, John worked on the construction of the Julien Dubuque Bridge. He spent a majority of his life farming until 1976 at which time he went to work for Kelly-Springfield in Freeport where he retired in 1988. John enjoyed good conversation, time spent with his family and a good cup of coffee. He will be sadly missed. He is survived by his wife, his children, David (deceased) (Bonnie) Allendorf of Cuba City, WI, Diane (Charlie) Copeland of Byron, IL, Delores Harty of Pecatonica, IL, Ruth (Al) Marino of Cape Coral, FL, Dennis (Carol) Allendorf of Shullsburg, Donald (Carolyn) Allendorf of Shullsburg, Kathy (Terry Staufacher) Allendorf of Monroe, WI, Janet (Tom) Bussan of Galena, Sue (Pete) Paquette of Shullsburg and Dick (Lori) Allendorf of Darlington, twenty grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, a brother, Jerry (Pauline) Allendorf , a sister Mary (Charles) Schultz both of Galena, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kenneth "Pete" Allendorf, two sisters, Betty Schultz and Patti Bruns and two sisters in infancy, Rita and Darlene. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at Mercy Medical Center and Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County and its Dialysis unit and to Fred Hofer for his special care of John, and our many friends and neighbors.
