Hugh (Tink) Cecil Durgin, Jr., 75, Monroe, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2017. He was born January 12, 1942 at St. Clare Hospital, Monroe; the only child to Hugh C. Durgin and Valeria Dorothy (West) Durgin. Tink graduated from Monroe High School on June 2, 1960. Following in his father's military service, Tink entered the Marine Corps in May 1964 and was honorably discharged for a pre-existing medical condition shortly after. Tink married Judith Lanaya Berndt on August 31, 1968 at Grace Lutheran Church, Monroe. Tink and Judy had no children. Tink was employed by Monroe Redi-Mix, Inc., which later became Monroe Construction, Inc., for over 40 years as a construction/concrete foreman.
Tink was a volunteer member of the Monroe Fire Department from 1966-1986 and received an Honorary Gold Badge for his service. He was a member of the Monroe Moose Lodge #754 for 49 years. He also thoroughly enjoyed his membership in the Gold Prospector's Association of America starting in 1993, which took him on many gold panning expeditions throughout South Dakota, Arizona, California and Alaska. Although his efforts were not lucrative, he enjoyed his hobby immensely and was most proud of his findings. Tink was a league bowler for many years in Monroe at Turner Hall Lanes in the Pleasure League and at Leisure Lanes in the Nite Owls League. He earned several awards in both leagues for his high series and high games.
Tink is survived by a multitude of cousins, relatives, God children, and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Judith, in 2015, and his parents Hugh Sr. and Valeria.
Everyone who knew Tink knew of his love and ability for socializing. He was the kind of person who could talk to anyone, about anything, and make it seem as if you'd known him forever. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated by the family to assist in covering funeral expenses. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Union Presbyterian Church, 2707 5th Street, Monroe. A visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow. Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family. You may also contact Bob or Lenae Ambrose at 702 26th Avenue, Monroe or 608-329-7105.
