NEW GLARUS/MONROE, WI - Herbert J. Eichelkraut, age 83, was born on May 31, 1927 the son of Julius and Alice (Hefty) Eichelkraut. He was baptized and confirmed at the Swiss United Church of Christ. After graduation from Legler Valley School, he was engaged in farming with his father. In 1954 he entered the Army where he received his GED. After serving for 18 months in Japan he was discharged in 1956. He then operated the home farm until his retirement in 1993. After that he made his home with his nephew Paul Zimmerman and family. He is further survived by a brother Leon of Monroe and a sister Ruth Zimmerman of New Glarus. Herbert was a very good artist, carpenter, and mechanic. He also loved his pigs, goats, and cats. He was in Hand in Hand for several years. Preceding him in death are his parents.
A military honors graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 at the Swiss Church Cemetery in New Glarus. The Zentner-Beal Funeral Home of New Glarus is serving the family.
