MONTICELLO - Helen M. (Krause) Kernen, age 76 of Monticello, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, October 31, 2010.

Helen was born on April 27, 1934 in Albany, Wisconsin. Helen was the daughter of Evelyn and Stanley Thorton.

She graduated from Albany High School. Helen married Edwin Kernen on October 8, 1955 at the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello.

Helen and Ed farmed in Mt. Pleasant Township for 22 years until moving into Monticello in August, 1977. She was also employed by St. Clare Hospital, Dr. Terry Freitag, Spurgeons in Monroe, New Glarus Foods, Winslow Industries, and After Hour Flowers in New Glarus.

She was a member of Zwingli United Church of Christ and enjoyed bowling, playing cards, crocheting, and helping at the farm.

Helen is survived by her two daughters, Connie (Bill) Anderson of Monticello, and Carmen (Ken) Humes of Tampa, FL; three grandsons, Charles (Waunita), Randall, and Anthony Anderson; two great grandchildren, Charles Jr. and Jazmin; a sister-in-law, Lucille Rupnow of Monroe; many special nieces and nephews; and her grand-dog Spanky.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin, on October 25, 2010; her parents; a brother-in-law, Clarence (Phyllis) Kernen; and a brother-in-law, Everette Rupnow.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Monticello. There will be no visitation prior to the funeral. The family will greet friends in fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Helen's name. The Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family.
