Helen L. Matzke, age 86 of Monroe, died on Monday, April 26, 2010 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. Helen was born Feb. 1, 1924, daughter of William and Ella (Wuethrich) Schneider. She attended Juda School, graduating in 1941. She married Herbert F. Matzke on December 23, 1944 at the United Methodist Church in Juda.

Helen and Herb operated the family honey bee business all their life until selling the bees in May of 2001. Helen worked for St. Clare Hospital, Rosa Greenhouse, K-mart, Juda School, Juda Methodist Church secretary, was a member of the Brodhead Country Club where she loved to golf, and lead the Juda Senior Citizen monthly gathering at the Juda Community Center. Helen and Herb went on many vacations with friends and family visiting Hawaii, Las Vegas, Mexico, Niagara Falls and many western places.

Helen enjoyed raising guppies. Her passion was making quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen did all kinds of crafts, loved the outdoors, gardening, and planting flowers. She never missed a Bingo day, and loved taking trips to the West.

Helen was very proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice Matzke and a son, James (Katherine) Matzke, all of Monroe; a brother, Lawrence (Lucille) Schneider, Browntown; half sister, Wilma Brandenburg, Brodhead; half brother, Fred (Esther) Gobeli, sister-in-law, Rose Schneider, and brother-in-law, Stanley Altenbernd, all of Monroe; four grandchildren, Lisa (LaJuane) Miller, Amy Parr, of Monroe; Erin (David) Allen, Cross Plains; and Bradley Matzke, Reedsburg, and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert; brother, Marvin Schneider; and half sister, Lorraine Altenbernd.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 at the Zion United Methodist Church, Juda, with Rev. Thomas M. Miller officiating. Interment will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Juda. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Helen's name.
