Helen Elaine Heyn Severson, age 79 of Monroe, formerly of Juda, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Monroe following a short illness.

She was born October 12, 1929 in Monroe, the daughter of Julius Heyn and Esther (Hein) Smith. Helen graduated from Juda High School in 1947 and married Robert E. Severson Sr. on November 4, 1950 at the Monroe E.U.B. Church.

Helen and Bob farmed in Spring Grove Township for 24 years before moving to Jefferson Township in 1974. She was employed as a medical assistant at the Monroe Clinic for 20 years before retiring in October, 1994.

Helen was a faithful member of the Juda Zion United Methodist Church having served in various capacities.

She enjoyed reading, square and round dancing, flowers, lawn care, and all types of nature.

Helen is survived by her husband, Robert Severson Sr.; children, Robert Edward (Mary) Severson Jr., Susan Louise (Michael) Aurand, John Alan (Leanne) Severson, and Thomas Lee (Vicki) Severson; six grandchildren, Thomas Jr., Heath, Ryan, Joshua, Jared, and Dylan Severson; a brother, David (Patra) Smith; and her step-mother, Olga Heyn Preston.

She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, William Smith.

Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in Helen's name for kitchen improvements at the Zion United Methodist Church.

The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
