Green County teens get probation for AK-47 theft
New Gavel

MONROE — Two Green County teenagers were convicted in separate plea and sentencing hearings in October and November for a gun theft in New Glarus.

Caleb Mark Elmer, 17, Monroe, and Luke Freddie Johnson, 17, Albany, were charged for the crime along with two juvenile co-defendants. Juvenile court cases are not public.

Elmer pleaded no contest to a felony charge of receiving stolen property, with a felony theft charge “read in,” meaning the judge could consider it at sentencing. He also pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of possessing THC and intentionally contributing to the delinquency of a child.

Elmer was sentenced to three years on probation with conditions that he complete alcohol or other drug (AODA) treatment and pay restitution with Johnson and their two juvenile co-defendants.

Johnson pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor counts of theft, with a felony theft charge dismissed, and was sentenced to 18 months on probation and 320 hours of community service. He is also ordered to complete an AODA assessment and pay his part of the restitution at a rate of at least $50/month.

Johnson is eligible to have his convictions expunged under a state law that grants leniency to young people.

The cases stem from the theft on April 7 of a $1,000 custom-built AK-47 rifle and about $3,000 worth of ammunition and other gun accessories from a vehicle parked in the 200 block of 3rd Avenue in New Glarus.

A neighbor called police at 3:10 a.m. after seeing a group of teenagers “sprinting down the roadway” carrying a large case, getting into a pickup truck and speeding away, according to court records.

Police combed through dozens of texts and Snapchat videos and interviewed numerous area teenagers about the theft, including minors. Some teens could be seen posing with or shooting the gun on video; a couple claimed it had been traded and sold into the Chicago market.
