Gladys J. Burmeister, age 87, of Gratiot, died on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the St. Angelus Retirement Community. She was born on October 12, 1921, the daughter of Albert and Ida (Hendricksen) Johnson. She was a graduate of Mud Branch Elementary School and of Argyle High School. Gladys and Donald F. Burmeister were married on June 24, 1941 at Apple Grove Lutheran Church. Gladys and her husband Donald worked side by side on their dairy farm for many years. In 1971 the couple moved to Gratiot. After the move, Gladys worked at a number of different jobs, including Spurgeon's and Value Village in Monroe and the Wiota Cheese Factory. Gladys was a life long member of the Apple Grove Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and the E.L.C.A. She was a member of the Harmony Homemakers and was a 4-H leader. Gladys was an avid bowler, enjoying bowling in both Monroe and Hollandale and continued until the age of 86. She also enjoyed playing cards and last played on the day at her 87th birthday. Gladys was a very accomplished musician, playing the clarinet, violin, being a piano accompanist and singing with her sisters at many different functions. She enjoyed traveling; her most memorable travels were to Hawaii and Norway. But most of all she cherished being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving are her children, Janet (Dale) Scott of Gratiot, Jim (Ellen) Burmeister of Gratiot, Joe (Lu) Burmeister of Brooklyn; son-in-law, Gaylord Schultz of South Wayne, 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Alyce (Cecil) Monson of WA; also several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Donald; daughter, Joyce Schultz; siblings, Celia Anderson, James Johnson, Inez Rood and 2 grandchildren in infancy.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at the Apple Grove Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Rev. Dan Bohlman, with burial in Apple Grove Lutheran Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home in Monroe. A memorial fund is being established in Gladys's memory.
