Gertrude M. "Trudy" Leiby, 87, of Freeport, died Thursday morning at Freeport Rehabilitation Center in Freeport. Trudy was born of Swiss immigrant cheese maker, Herman Maeder and his wife, Julia (Mueller) Maeder on March 15, 1923 at the Dublin Cheese Factory in rural Darlington, Wisconsin. She made friends easily a trait she inherited from her father. She helped care for her brother, Johnny, who was born in 1926 and sister, Ena, born in 1930. She graduated from Darlington High School. She studied beauty culture in Elgin and worked as a hairdresser at the Joseph Spiess Company in Elgin for many years. Later she worked at the Burgess Battery Co. in Freeport. She married Daniel Leiby Sr. in July of 1968 in Freeport. They enjoyed bowling and several road trips across the United States. He preceded her in death 2003. She became a resident of Freeport Rehab in 2002. On Thursday, December 2, 2010 she was reunited with her parents and brother. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Ena & Albert Schuetz of Monroe. Also surviving are 4 nieces and 2 great nieces and one great nephew. Funeral Services will be Tuesday 10:00 A.M. at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established for F.H.N. Memorial Hospice in her memory.
