NEW GLARUS - George W. Gerber, age 92, of New Glarus passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the New Glarus Home. He was born on December 16, 1921 in the Town of Ridgeway to his parents Rudy and Helena (Butteris) Gerber. George attended the Blue Mounds, Pleasant Ridge, and West Middleton Schools. On November 20, 1941 he was united in marriage to Alleda Hefty at Verona. As a young man he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. Later George worked as a farmer, cheesemaker, and carpenter. He was a member of the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus.
George is survived by his children Jerry (Elaine) Gerber of Sun Prairie, WI, Rudy (Betty) Gerber of New Glarus, WI, Andrew (Glenda) Gerber of Monroe, WI, Patricia (Norm) Fries of West Bend, WI, Linda Pederson of Monticello, WI, Sue Gerber of New Glarus, WI, Tina (Russell) Moser of New Glarus, WI, and Connie Schafer of New Glarus, WI, grandchildren Scott Gerber, Christopher Fries, Tammy (Charlie) Baker, Jerry Pederson, Jessica Webber, Jason Gerber, Jaime Gerber, Danny Gerber, Brandon Gerber, Sarina Moser, Jacob Moser, Braxton Schafer, Hannah Schafer, and Alissa (Travis) Weissenfluh. He is further survived by his brother Norman (Marge) Gerber of Stoughton, WI, sisters Janice Olday of Verona, WI, Frances Trainor of Mt. Horeb, WI and Shirley (Harry) Meier of Pardeville, WI, sisters-in-law Ruth "Avie" Gerber of Kentucky and Dorothy "Penny" (Marvin) Peterson of Belleville, WI, and a brother-in-law LeRoy "Sparky" Hefty of Verona, WI.
He was preceded in death by his wife Alleda, two sons Edward and George Jr., brothers Joe and Robert, sisters Betty Singelton, Berneice Schulenburg, Alice Redpenning, and Mary Ann King, and a son-in-law Jerry Pederson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Swiss United Church of Christ, 18 Fifth Ave., New Glarus, WI with the Rev. Craig Jan-McMahon officiating with burial in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
