George Lewis Derendinger, age 84, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016 in College Station, Texas. George was born July 27, 1931 in Monroe, Wisconsin the son of John (Jack) and Rose (Schaer) Derendinger. George's family lived in the Postville area before moving to Blanchardville when George was ten years old. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor's degree in Agriculture Science in addition to completing the Navel ROTC program. George served in the U.S. navy for twelve years where he flew a wide variety of aircraft that included seaplanes, airships, and carrier-based jets. George's navy experience included criminal investigation, weapons specialist, efficiency expert for fleet maintenance as well as a brief stint in 1960-61 in Antarctica as a meteorologist in connection with Operation Deepfreeze. George was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant and received the National Defense, Antarctica Service Medal and eight letters of commendation.
After leaving the navy, George moved his family to College Station, Texas where he attended and graduated from Texas A&M with master's and doctorate degrees in soil physics. After receiving his degrees he worked for the Army Corps of engineers where he was the director of the Engineer Planning School. George then retired after thirty years of service before taking a position with Soil Analytical Services in College Station. George was a certified agronomist and a member of the American Legion and Parkway Baptist Church in College Station.
George is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Bertha (Don) Magnuson and Helen Baumgartner and a brother Donald Derendinger.
George is survived by his Wife of 61 years Connie, daughters Tina (Ralph) Coe of Flower Mound, Texas, Nancy Derendinger of College Station and son John (Gloria) of Weslaco, Texas, grandchildren Kelly and Jimmy Fincher of Weslaco, Texas as well as numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren. George is also survived by many nieces and nephews in both Texas and Wisconsin.
