Gary D. Swiggum, age 69 of Monroe, formerly of Wiota area, died on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on January 31, 1940, the son of Virgil and Ruth (Butler) Swiggum, in Monroe. He was a 1958 graduate of South Wayne High School. After graduation, Gary went on to become a licensed cheesemaker and made cheese with his Dad. He also hauled milk for the Elzen Trucking Company.
Gary was married to the former Marcia Yeazel Haas on July 5, 1967, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe. Gary was a member of the Wiota Fire Department and served as their Fire Chief for many years. He was also a deputy for the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department. Gary was a lifelong member of the Wiota Lutheran Church.
Gary loved to play dominoes and cards, and was a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers. He also played slow-pitch and bowled many years for various Wiota area teams.
Surviving is his son, Torry Swiggum of Wiota; step-son, Mike (Deb) Haas and their two children, Derek and Kyle of Reno, NV; brothers, Neil Swiggum of Wiota, Dennis (Jane) Swiggum of Monroe; brother-in-law, Phil (Mary) Rundle of Brodhead; ex-wife, Marcia Swiggum of Wiota; uncle, Gerald (Frieda) Swiggum; aunt, Hedy Swiggum; also several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews; along with other friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Carla Rundle, and aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the Wiota Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Rev. Carol Johnson, with burial in the West Wiota Lutheran Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wiota Lutheran Church. The Hanson Funeral Home is serving the family.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks for all the extra tender and loving care that the nurses and staff at Pleasant View gave Gary and his family for the past 20 years.
