Frieda I. Swiggum, age 95 of Monroe died on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. She was born on December 22, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Mamie (Ellingson) Stark. She was a graduate of Monroe High School, Green County Normal School and U.W. Platteville with a teaching degree. Frieda and Gerald Swiggum were married on June 24, 1939 in Browntown. She taught rural schools in Brodhead and Browntown areas. She taught at the Browntown Elementary School for 25 years. She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Browntown, Green County Retired Educators, WI Education Association, Alpha Delta Kappa and the Charter Chums Homemakers.
She is survived by her son, James (Judy) Swiggum of Allen, TX; daughters, Joan Arvedson of Elm Grove, Janet Schneider of Randelman, NC; 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and brother, Gary (Lenita) Stark of Gratiot. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald, on January 1, 2013; brothers Clifford and Maynard; 2 grandsons and 1 great grandson.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home with Rev. William McIntyre officiating. Burial will follow in Saucerman Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials in Frieda's memory may be directed to Peace United Church of Christ or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
