BRODHEAD - Franklyn A. Condon, of Brodhead, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2009, at his home. He was born on September 2, 1924 in Janesville, WI, the son of Frank and Loisa (Clark) Condon. He married Kathryn LeFevre on June 29, 1946 at the Chapel at Valley Forge Hospital.
Frank grew up in Brodhead, WI, where he graduated from high school. In his childhood he associated with farmers and livestock dealers and his father, who was an automotive dealer. Frank eventually became parts manager at his fathers dealership. After high school, he attended the UW-Madison. He entered the Army, where he had basic training in Texas, followed by 6 months of college at New York University, where he studied engineering. Frank entered the 104th Division at Camp Carson. Following training, he was shipped over seas on August 29, 1944. His was the first convoy to leave New York to go directly to France. He landed at Omaha Beach and marched through France, Belgium, and fought battles in the Netherlands, where he was wounded. He was then transferred to a hospital in England. Frank received the Purple Heart for his service to his country. He was discharged on December 13, 1946 and has been followed by the VA-Medical system since that time. Frank was a lifetime member of the National BVA, VFW, and American Legion. He had been a member of the local troop committee for the Brodhead Boy Scouts, Brodhead Recycling Committee, Brodhead Swimming Pool Committee, and 1956 Centennial Committee, and active in the United Methodist Church, Brodhead. He and his wife, Kay, were regularly scheduled volunteers at the Madison VA Hospital. Franklyn was also known for his vast knowledge of Brodhead history.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn "Kay," Brodhead; two sons, Franklyn A. (Jan) Condon III, Pete (Sherry) Condon, both of Brodhead; two daughters, Kathleen (Duane) Zweifel, Waunakee, and Susan (Jeffery) Killey, Pt. Washington, WI; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2009, at the United Methodist Church, Brodhead, with Rev. Steve Groves officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead, with full military rites. Visitation will be held on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church. The D. L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Brodhead, is assisting the family.
