Ernest R. Ammon, age 91 of Monroe, died unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, March 17, 2016. Ernie was born on December 17, 1924 in Herzogenbuchsee, Canton Bern, Switzerland, the son of Ernest and Marie (Mueller) Ammon. He landed at Ellis Island on the day of the stock market crash in 1929. He came to the Monroe area in 1947 and married Alice Custer on January 25, 1964 at St. John's United Church of Christ. Ernie had a dairy farm in Jefferson Township and then was employed for 22 years at Moore Business Forms before retiring in 1991. He was very proud of his hard work ethic. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, member and past treasurer of the National Historic Cheesemaking Center, Swiss Club, Turn and Schwing for 20 years, was a Schwingen (Swiss wrestling) champion, and enjoyed playing the Swiss accordion.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alice Ammon of Monroe; three children, Peter (Cherie) of Geneva, IL and their children, Mary, Maggie, Matthew, and Micah; Christian (Shelly) of Schofield, WI and their children, Brook, Myles, and Olivia; and Liz (Bob) of Lafayette, CO; two sisters, Rosa Ammon and Marie Laeser, both of Monroe; many nieces and nephews; and his dog, Seppi. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant daughter, Jeannie.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 21, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at St. John's United Church of Christ, Monroe, with Reverend Tiff Bates officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe, followed by a luncheon at Turner Hall. Visitation will be at the Newcomer Funeral Home on Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial are suggested in Ernie's name to the National Historic Cheesemaking Center, St. John's Church, or Turner Hall. Ernie was a hard worker who was proud of his family, his Swiss heritage, and his dual citizenship.
