Elizabeth J. "Betty" Pankau age 86 of Monroe, died Saturday, July 20, 2013 at her home. Betty was born April 3, 1927 in Milladore, Wisconsin, the daughter of Peter and Jenny (Hilgart) Grassel. She graduated from Auburndale High School in 1945 and married Erwin Pankau on May 29, 1948 in Milwaukee. The couple moved to Monroe in 1949. Betty worked as a medical claims coordinator at St. Clare Hospital for several years until her retirement. She was a member of St. Victor Catholic Church, enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends, sewing, and playing golf in the Windy Acres Women's League. She also enjoyed attending plays at the Fireside, linedancing, and teaching Mahjong at the Monroe Senior Center. She and Erv enjoyed 13 winters in Sebring, Florida.
She is survived by her husband, Erwin "Erv" Pankau of Monroe; four children, Alan (Kelly) Pankau of Ranier, WA, Jeff (Judy) Pankau of Forney, TX, Judy Pankau of Surprise, AZ, and Mark Pankau of Ranchita, CA; five grandchildren, Jaton, Jeremy, Jeanette, Tracey, and Kristen; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine (Phil) Haasl of Wisconsin Rapids; and two brothers, Bill Grassel of Utah, and Tom (Darlene) Grassel of CA. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bob Grassel; a brother-in-law, Marvin Frodl; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Grassel.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, July 26, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church with Father Larry Bakke officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Killian Catholic Church Cemetery, Blenker, WI. Visitation will be at the Church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established in Betty's name. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
