Elaine Benedict age 71 of Darlington, WI, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at her home in Darlington following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born in Dodgeville, WI, on September 4, 1937, the daughter of Willard and Helen (Peterson) Penhallegon. Elaine graduated from Darlington High School in 1955 and later graduated from UW Platteville in 1960. She was united in marriage to Spencer Benedict on December 23, 1961 in Darlington.

Elaine taught in Random Lake, Deerfield, Rosendale and Darlington before opening Benedict's Retail Store in Darlington with her husband Spencer. When he became Lafayette County Treasurer, she continued with her true love, sewing and quilting, while operating Pins & Pieces Quilt Shop in Darlington. Her most enjoyable times were spent sewing, quilting and teaching the many friends she acquired while running the quilt shop until her cancer forced her into retirement.

She is survived by her husband: Spencer of Darlington, two sons: Scott Benedict of Darlington, and Bart Benedict of Madison, WI; one daughter: Natalie (Jay) Ripp of Black Earth, WI; two grandchildren: Hillary and Kallie Ripp; one sister: Joan Davies of Madison, WI; one sister in-law: Mary Penhallegon of Rockford, IL; and several nieces and nephews. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; one brother: William Penhallegon; one nephew; and one brother in-law: Bill Davies.

Elaine was a member of First Baptist Church in Darlington, Darlington Red Hat Society, Darlington Chamber of Commerce and Historical Society. Her favorite activity was quilting and will always be remembered for the many quilts she made for charitable organizations throughout the years.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church in Darlington, 15691 County Road K., Darlington, WI 53530 with Rev. Nate Whiteside officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington. A visitation will be held Friday, August 7, 2009 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington.
