NEW GLARUS - Dr. Paul L. Thompson, age 90, passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the New Glarus Home in New Glarus, Wisconsin. Paul was born on February 13, 1921, in Blanchardville to Edward and Mary (Anderson) Thompson Jr. He graduated from Blanchardville High School, the class of 1939, and attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison from 1940-1942. In June 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp for pilot training and earned his wings and rank of 2nd Lieutenant in August 1943. As a B-24 bomber pilot, he flew missions in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters. He married Gloria M. Ziltner on April 14, 1945 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was discharged in June 1945 and moved to Ames, Iowa where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University in June 1949. After living in Freeport, Illinois for a short time, he and Gloria moved to Argyle in 1951 to begin a career of veterinary medicine with large animal farm practices. He retired on January 1, 1988 and continued to live in Argyle until he and Gloria moved to New Glarus in 1997. He was a life long member of the Argyle Lutheran Church, a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Wisconsin Veterinary Association and the Argyle American Legion Post #251. He also served on the Argyle Lutheran Church Board of Trustees and the Argyle School Board.

He is survived by his wife Gloria Thompson of New Glarus, WI; a daughter and son-in-law: Sara Jo and Steve Craw of Mission Viejo, CA; grandchildren: Jason (Sarah) Craw of Atlanta, GA and Jeff Craw of New York, NY; sisters-in-law, Germaine Thompson, Julie Thompson and Ruth Wenger and brother-in-law, Royal Ziltner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Vivien Paulson and two brothers, John and Robert Thompson.

Paul always enjoyed and treasured his family, his friends and his faith - and, of course, a good "Ole and Lena" joke.

Memorials are suggested to the New Glarus Home, the Argyle Lutheran Church and the American Legion.
