BRODHEAD - Dr. Graham M. Miller, VMD, age 89, of Brodhead, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 2, 2009. "Doc" was born on August 28, 1919 in Morristown, NJ, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Hipson) Miller. He married Edith Burt on January 29, 1947 in Philadelphia, PA.

The family moved to Bethlehem, PA when he was about 10 years old. He received a B.S. degree in dairy science from Penn State University, then attended Rutgers University for 2 years and received a M.S. degree in dairy science. He worked for a year in New York until going in to the Army. He spent 39 months of service in the Pacific, going from Australia to the Philippines. He returned to Pennsylvania and attended Veterinary School, graduating in 1950. In 1951 he came to Brodhead, where he started the Brodhead Veterinary Service. "Doc" practiced for 24 years in what is now the present practice. He left the veterinary profession in 1974 and became a small farmer, selling produce from his 40 acres at the east end of Brodhead until about 1995. 'Doc' loved the outdoors, especially his Chesapeake retrievers and competing in field trials throughout the United States. He was a member of the AVMA, The Madison Retriever Club, and was an ardent small game and duck hunter. He also loved to read, enjoyed music, and a good bottle of wine.

'Doc' is survived by his wife Edith, and together they sired 6 wonderful children: Linda (Terry) Stroud, Caledonia, IL, Wayne (Bonnie) Miller, Genoa, WI, Sandra (Warren) Lada, Bloomfield, MI, Patty (Fred) Manor, Elmwood, WI, Connie (Dale) Holthusen, Mt. Horeb, WI, and Allen (Robin) Miller, Pecatonica, IL; seventeen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Cornwell, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at the D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, WI, with Rev. Amos Shimko officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. Tuesday, until time of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Brodhead Public Library in "Doc's" name.
