Donald J. Miller, age 78 of Monroe, lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on July 12, 1933 in Monroe, the son of Franz and Flora (Kubly) Miller. Don was a graduate of Monroe High School. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1952, serving during the Korean War on the USS Wiltsie, and being honorably discharged in 1956. Don and Helen Nybroten were married on March 12, 1960 in Argyle. He was a self employed painter for 25 years and worked for the City of Monroe Water Department for 11 years. Don was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, the Zilmer-Riley American Legion Post #84, Yester-Year Auto Club, and the Ostestaden Sons of Norway, Lodge #5-642. He was an avid Packers, Badgers and Brewers fan. Don enjoyed hunting, bowling and euchre, also cruising with the Yester-Year Auto Club in his 1980 Monte Carlo. His woodworking skills resulted in beautiful pieces of furniture and he was very meticulous to do the best job possible. Don was a jack-of-all trades, enjoyed gardening and outside work and he always had some project going on whether it was at home or for his children. But most of all he truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Don is survived by his wife, Helen of 51 years; children, Gary Miller of Colorado Springs, CO, Julie Miller of Monroe, Lorie (Mark) Peterson of South Wayne; grandchildren, Randi (Kris) Mann, Curtis Miller, Raylin Peterson; great grandchild, Ethan Mann; sister, Frances Wells of Monroe; aunt, Olga Hoesly of New Glarus and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents along with aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 12:00 P.M. at St. John's United Church of Christ with Rev. William T. Mike Heath officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe. A visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at noon at the Church. The Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home is serving the family. Memorials may be given in Don's name to either St. John's U.C.C. or The American Legion post #84.
