Donald E. West, age 86 of Monroe, died Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Monroe Manor Nursing Home. Don was born June 4, 1921 in Jordan Township, Green County, Wisconsin, the son of John and Emma (Tertin) West. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1939 and entered the U.S. Army on July 9, 1942. He was stationed in Italy and France with the First Special Service Force. Don was presented with a Purple Heart and was honorably discharged on April 3, 1945. He married Jean Marie Parker on April 1, 1946 in East Dubuque, Iowa. Don worked for Kraft Food in Chicago for 19 years before returning to Green County, farming in Sylvester Township until 1991.
He was a member of the Monroe V.F.W Cecil Jones Post #2312, American Legion Post #84, and loved to play cards and watch all types of sports.
Survivors include a daughter, Sherry (Herb) Brasda of York, WI; two sons, Jody West of Tacoma, WA, and Mark West of Monroe; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Marian (Carl) Munz of Monroe; and three brothers, Delbert West of Champaign, IL, Marvin West of Brodhead, and Gordon West of Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean, on July 8, 2000; four sisters, Val Durgin, Sis Rutsch, Arla Albright, and Karen Akins; and three brothers, Elmer, Russell, and Merlin West.
