Delbert G. "Korkey" Krupke, age 78 of Monroe, died Monday, January 21, 2008 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital following a brief illness. Korkey was born September 30, 1929 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois, the son of the late Fred and Rose (Hellwig) Krupke. He graduated from South Wayne High School in 1947 and moved to Monroe in 1950 working at various businesses on the Monroe square including Benkerts, Baumgartners, Ferrons Mens Wear, and G Stuarts.
He married Rosemarie Trumpy on November 5, 1950 at the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello.
Korkey owned and operated Korkey's Zephyr in Monroe for several years, worked as a salesman for Green County Memorials, and most recently operated Krupke Memorials.
He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and Monroe Moose Lodge #754. He was a lifetime member and past president of the Monroe Lions Club and was instrumental in organizing the Lions Christmas party for the Apostolate to the Handicapped for several years. Korkey also obtained the stuffed animals that the Lions Club provided to Monroe EMS. He was active in the Monroe Jaycees for several years and served on various Cheese Days Committees. Korkey enjoyed bowling, golf, playing euchre, and traveling in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
Survivors include his wife, Rosemarie Krupke of Monroe; three children, Stephen Krupke of Monroe, Rodell (Terry) Johnson of Germantown, and Kevin (Jackie) Krupke of Monroe; six grandchildren, Jacob (Tara) Krupke, Elizabeth, Theresa, and Christopher Johnson, and Jon and Ariel Krupke. He is also survived by his devoted dog, Peggy Sue.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2008, at the NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe. Reverend William "Mike" Heath of St. John's United Church of Christ will officiate with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, January 25, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund will be established in Korkey's name for the Monroe Lions Leaderdogs for the Blind.
