DARLINGTON - The Darlington Police Department is investigating the theft of two Recall Walker signs, possibly by someone in a red truck.
Both signs were stolen out of the private front yards of two homes, with the most recent theft reported at about 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, from a residence on Cornelia Street.
In both cases, a red truck was observed as being involved.
"Regardless of whether one is for or against the (Governor Scott Walker) recall effort, the City of Darlington Police Department will preserve their Constitutional right to engage in the expression of free speech through the display of signs in a lawful fashion," said Police Chief Jason King in a statement.
A charge of stealing a sign could carry a penalty of up to nine months in jail and up to $10,000 in fines, according to King.
The police are requesting anyone with information about these thefts to call the department at (608) 776-4981 or report it anonymously to Lafayette County Crime Stoppers at (800) 606-TIPS.
