Crew hits gas main near Monroe's Northside school

MONROE - A utility crew working one block west of Northside Elementary School struck a gas main Friday, Oct. 25, causing students and staff to be kept in the building for a short time while gas and fumes dissipated.

The gas company was onsite when the incident occurred, and the gas main was quickly shut off, according to an automated AlertNow message from the Monroe school district.

Some fumes were drawn into and could be smelled in a portion of the building, according to the school district.

The Monroe fire department performed tests and determined there was no danger to students or staff.
