Felonies
MONROE - Mitchell D. Bliss, 20, Belleville, was found guilty of criminal damage to property and of entry into a locked coin box, both class A misdemeanors, Sept. 10 in Green County Circuit Court.
Bliss pleaded no contest to the charges. He received 30 days in jail, 24 months of probation, and $1,545 in fines. Two other charges in the case were dismissed on the prosecutor's motion.
Bliss also pleaded no contest in another case. He was found guilty of theft of movable property valued at between $5,000 and $10,000, a class H felony. He received three years of probation, to be served concurrent with the first sentencing.
Bliss was originally charged Oct. 3 with a Class I felony for possessing burglary tools and with three Class A misdemeanors for criminal damage to property, entry into a locked coin box and theft of movable property valued under $2,500. Court records indicate Bliss used a knife and screwdriver to pry open a door on a locked coin box and tried to steal coins on Sept. 22, 2013, at Kubly Tire and Service Station in Monticello. He was charged Oct. 31 with a Class H felony count of theft of movable property valued between $5,000 and $10,000 and a Class A misdemeanor count of criminal damage to property, stemming from a theft in July from the New Glarus Brewery in New Glarus. Court records indicated Bliss stole a 2013 Legend enclosed trailer valued at about $4,000 and a 1999 Metalworks trailer valued at about $2,500, plus about $1,000 worth of conveyor rollers, forklift forks and pallets, and took them about a mile south of the brewery to the Voegeli Farm Quarry on Exeter Crossing Road, which is leased to Bjoin Limestone, Inc. At the quarry, he allegedly broke the gate locks, used a shovel to dent and smash the infrared cameras on-site and damaged one of the trailers by backing it to the quarry's edge.
Kevin James Venden, 29, Verona, was found guilty of operating a vehicle while under the influence, causing injury to passengers under 16 years old, an unclassified felony. He pleaded no contest. During a sentencing hearing Sept. 10, he received six months in jail, 36 month probation, $2,565 in fines and court costs, and 36 months driver's license revocation. Two other similar charges in the same incident were dismissed in the prosecutor's motion.
Two counts of Class H felony bail jumping, filed in early 2014, were also dismissed.
With three convictions of driving while intoxicated, Venden was arrested on the same charge late July 4, 2012, after a pickup truck he was driving collided with a utility pole in a road ditch in the Town of New Glarus. Venden was injured and transported by Medflight to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. Two of Venden's passengers, a woman and a child, both of rural Verona, were also injured and transported by Belleville EMS to Madison. A third passenger, a Monticello man, was uninjured. Deputies responded at 11:47 p.m. to the accident.
