MONROE - A Belleville man stalked a woman for months and then caused a rollover crash that seriously injured her in March 2012, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday, April 8.
Jon Harvey Funseth, 49, faces a Class D felony charge of first-degree reckless injury, a Class H felony charge of aggravated battery and Class I felony counts of stalking and reckless driving causing injury.
The investigation into Funseth began with a car crash on County W east of County CC in Exeter Township on March 6, 2012. The alleged victim, a 43-year-old woman, was giving Funseth a ride in her car when the vehicle swerved toward and hit a guardrail. The impact was so great the car went airborne, overturned and landed in a field.
Both Funseth and the woman were injured. She suffered a severely fractured shoulder blade, many rib fractures, internal bruising and a punctured lung.
Investigators say Funseth caused the crash by intentionally grabbing the steering wheel from her and causing the car to swerve.
Court records allege Funseth and the woman were acquaintances and he had stalked her for months leading up to the crash. He reportedly showed up often at her home on Dayton Street in Brooklyn Township, refusing to leave, and even broke in and stood over her bed as she slept. He's also accused of sending her numerous threatening texts - up to 60 messages in one day - and leaving her notes and other items at her home.
His initial appearance is set for May 20.
