MONROE - A California woman may be taking four of the 50 dogs seized by authorities in May off of the local humane society's hands.
On Monday she sought to prove ownership of four of the Great Danes.
Annsley Kast appeared by phone for a motion hearing before Green County Circuit Judge James Beer. One of the defendants in the case, Kathy Williams, 54, of Brodhead, shared custody of the dogs but lost them after failing to pay a court-ordered bond to retain custody.
In July, Green County Humane Society was awarded ownership of 50 dogs - 46 taken during execution of a search warrant on the rural Green County house on May 25, and 17 puppies born once the animals were in captivity.
Kast will have to pay costs associated with the four dogs, according to Green County's assistant corporation counsel, Jane Landretti. Once the payments are made she can retrieve the dogs, but the total amount owed is still being calculated.
It is costing GCHS more than $600 a day to care for the dogs.
The other defendants are Melissa Harrel, 57; Allyson Williams, 24; and Donovan Williams, 45, all of Brodhead.
Kathy Williams is charged with three counts of intentionally mistreating animals, a class A misdemeanor; 2 counts of intentionally providing improper animal shelter, a class A misdemeanor; and two counts of intentional mistreatment of animals, a class A misdemeanor. A signature bond of $2,500 was set.
A pre-trial conference is set for 8:30 a.m. Aug. 16.
Donovan Williams is charged with five counts of intentional mistreatment of animals and one count of intentionally providing improper animal shelter. A signature bond of $2,500 was set. A pre-trial conference is set for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 23.
Allyson Williams is charged with two counts of intentionally providing improper animal shelter, and one count of intentional mistreatment of animals. A $1,000 signature bond was set. A pre-trial conference for her is set for 8:30 a.m. Aug. 16. All defendants share the same condition of bond - they are forbidden from owning, possessing, confining or caring for any dogs while residing at N4651 County F in Brodhead.
