DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office is investigating at least 13 reports of vehicles being entered and items stolen in the village of Benton.

According to Lafayette County Sheriff Scott Pedley, during the early morning hours of Thursday, unlocked vehicles were entered, the contents of which were gone through and items of value removed.

In at least three cases, unlocked walk-in garage doors were entered and items from vehicles inside were taken.

Electronic devices, cash, tobacco products and a starter pistol are among the items reported stolen.

The Lafayette County Sheriff's Department urge residents throughout the county to always remove ignition keys from vehicles and to lock vehicles, homes and outbuildings.

"Most people work hard to earn their possession, and there is no point in making your property easy prey for criminals to gain access to," Pedley said.

"No community in our region is immune from this type of criminal activity, and citizen involvement is crucial," he added. The sheriff's department recommends citizens report unusual or suspicious activities promptly.
