Monroe Police

MONROE — A Monroe woman in her 50s called police to report a possible phone scam at about 10:10 a.m. Thursday, March 26. She had received a call from a person claiming she had a warrant out for her arrest and she needed to get them several thousand dollars worth of credit card-type gift cards to clear the warrant. She went to Walgreens in Monroe and bought the gift cards, but her husband convinced her it was a scam and she should go to police. The scam was ultimately unsuccessful and the woman lost no money. For the past year or so, police have been getting reports of similar scams in which the victim is forced to buy gift cards, usually by a scam artist claiming to be with the IRS, FBI or other law enforcement agency.
